first figure drawings in awhile. it's feeling rusty these days.

Richard Williams came to blue sky yesterday. inspiring stuff. He would sum up entire sections of his life in sentences like, "so then I took 6 years off to concentrate on figure drawing." And, "It was great painting in spain, I could paint one university professor's portrait a year and live sleeping on the beach." I wish it could have been more of a demo/retrospective like he had at MoMA, but his advice on self-censorship and dealing with clients was great.

But I think that's another post.

chicken cowboy's going to st louis!

I always figured chicken cowboy was from the midwest. That's why he's so mild-mannered.

Lots of projects and stuff and moving in the next couple weeks. Expect another micro-short in a fortnight, this time only slightly chicken-related.

Hi everyone. It's crunch time. Here are some doodles.

Also, I thought I would start posting some doodles from the tiny sketchbook project.
So here goes. First I'll post the drawing actual size, then post it blown up. The first one's by me:

Here's a page by Andrew Coats.

And a page by Moroni. (one of my favorites).

Oh yeah, some more chicken cowboy news--Chicken Cowboy will be screening at the Austin Film Festival starting on October 16th!

the latest from the world of chicken cowboy. Here's the new short short.

First festival news--Chicken Cowboy will be screening at the New Hampshire Film Festival held October 16-19th. In other news, Shark Suit: the Musical will be screening at HBO on October 16th.

If anybody in Wildwood NJ finds my glasses in a water slide or on a beach, please send them my way.

whale wednesday . . . a day late.

and some dr breakfast.

Friday, August 22, 2008

I've been wanting to work on some sort of collaborative extra-curricular project for a long time now--there are more graphic novel collections and art books from studio employees than there ever these days. It left me thinking, "where to start?"

The answer: start small! So here it is. THE TINY SKETCHBOOK PROJECT

Yup. That's it. Purchased from a doll house furniture store, the book is about 20 pages and a little larger than a thumbnail. I've been passing it around here at blue sky. People do tiny sketches in the tiny sketchbook. Like this one by Rafael:

It's sort of like sketchtravel, but on a much smaller scale. And none of that, "auction it off for charity" stuff, because it wouldn't fetch all that much at auction. So I'll be scanning some of the drawings that people have done so far. In fact, the thing's already full. So perhaps this will be a continuing project.

Did anybody see all those tibetan protesters in grand central at 6pm on friday? I did.

was reading some good old raymond chandler on the train. Made me want to be a detective.

There are so many wrinkles in the face of tommy lee jones. it's mesmerizing. like his eyes are set in a series of 50 successively smaller eye sockets.

When I find my camera cord, I will post pictures of yesterday's great gingerbread house disaster. How could I have known they were so difficult to construct?

Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Work and commuting has been keeping me pretty buy these days. But I'm also trying to make another chicken cowboy short--this time, a micro short. It's about 15 seconds and is pretty straightforward.

here's a shot:

I'll post it on youtube when it's done. Hopefully in a week or so.

pigs

wish i had more time to paint. these are just some quickies.

oh yeah! I forgot--Chicken Cowboy is a finalist in the Angelus Student Film Festival! Thanks dudes! Check it out here:

http://www.angelus.org/winners-current.html

I'm happy. This is the first festival to get back to me. I've been a finalist at Angelus for 3 years running, with Shark Suit in 2007 and Bigfoot's Eulogy in 2006. I know I've really improved since then, so hopefully this is the start of something good. Here's the trailer again:

some more batmans

i would really like to see a superhero cooking show.

Awhile back I thought "cooking with robocop" would be perfect for food network's late night block. Unfit for the force, he was reprogrammed as a chef bot. So he teaches dudes how to cook, you know, attaching blenders and mixers to his hands and stuff. All in the same robocop voice. And occasionally, he just blows something up accidentally.

I hope someone out there steals my idea on this one--I'm more interested in watching it than making it.

i was thinking about maybe getting a whale tattoo

Monday, July 21, 2008

seems the best I can do for posts these days are scribbles here and there. here's another would you rather question I've been thinking about for awhile now. a classic.

Would you rather have a sea-bass for an arm? Or frequently fart confetti? The confetti also blows a hole in the seat of your pants, and makes a sound like a room full of those happy birthday kazoo things.

comments?

who doesn't like batman?

my old car was named batman. sometimes i miss that little nissan.

Thursday, July 10, 2008

would you rather....

have one of your arms be a harpoon and all of the fingers on your other hand be tiny harpoons?

or. . .

be covered with hair?

serious discussion only, please. and no fence-sitting.
